91-104 (complete paper or proceedings contents)

Abstract

A comparative study of two advanced-level speaking tests -- one employing an interview between examiner and candidate and the other utilizing a paired format in a multi-stage decision-making task -- is reported. Quantitative and qualitative analyses of the effects of task format on grammar complexity and linguistic functions produced by the learners taking both tests are discussed.
