This contribution provides an introduction to the application of ultrasound imaging to phonetic and phonological research. Ultrasound allows the speech researcher to visualize a subject's tongue shape and function. The basic technical principles of ultrasound imaging and the specific methodology for speech research are outlined. In particular, methods for static and dynamic three-dimensional imaging of the tongue are described.
