Este artículo explora el uso de la forma de tratamiento usted en la zona de los Andes venezolanos, uso que difiere del considerado estándar. Dicha forma es la propia de la lengua familiar, mientras que tú es utilizado para marcar el distanciamiento cortés con respecto al interlocutor. Para explicar este fenómeno inusual, que invierte los valores pragmáticos de los dos pronombres en la inmensa mayoría del mundo hispano-hablante, se recurre a la sociolingüística histórica y a la sociolingüística dialectal.

This article explores the usage of the second person pronouns usted and tú in the Venezuelan Andes. This usage differs dramatically from that considered standard. In this geographical area, usted belongs to the familiar register whereas tú is used to mark respectful social distance with regards to the listener. To explain this unusual phenomenon, which inverts the pragmatic values of both pronouns in the rest of the Spanish-speaking world, the author appeals to dialectal sociolinguistics and historical sociolinguistics.
