Negation and the Interpretation of Spanish Rhetorical Exclamatives
Patricia Andueza and Javier Gutiérrez-Rexach
17-25 (complete paper or proceedings contents)

Abstract

This paper compares rhetorical exclamatives to rhetorical questions to determine the differences between these two apparently similar constructions. In rhetorical exclamatives negation is syntactically local and pragmatically activated, failing to create a downward entailing environment at the propositional level. This explains the contrasting behavior of these two types of rhetorical sentences with regard to NPI-licensing and why NPIs cannot occur in rhetorical exclamatives.
