The present study investigates language transfer in the acquisition of the semantic contrast between the Preterit and Imperfect marking in Spanish by English-speaking and Chinese-speaking learners. The results show that the English-speaking participants were sensitive to the aspectual contrast on accomplishments and achievements, while the Chinese L1 group did not detect this contrast. On the other hand, both groups did not recognize the semantic contrast on states. The general findings of the present study indicate that language learners' L1 influences their interpretation of the aspectual marking in the L2.
