Abstract

This paper discusses the acquisition of form-meaning relations of past tense and present perfective in English by Japanese speaking learners of English. The experimental results indicate that the durative events, either completed or ongoing, were more difficult than the non-durative events in English past tense and present perfective sentences for Japanese speaking learners of English. The difficulty comes from transfer of L1 semantics in L2 acquisition of tense and aspect, but it can be overcome as English proficiency increases.
