Accounting for Variability in the Acquisition of English Articles

In this paper, the authors study the acquisition of definite and indefinite articles in English L2 by Serbian L1 speakers. Serbian has no DP and no articles, so the impact of the L1 is hypothesized to be non-uniform across learners. The results indicate that there is considerable inter-learner variability and that the L1 does not have a uniform effect across learners. Furthermore, learners appear to have access to UG options not present in either the L1 or the L2. These findings are interpreted consistent with Full Transfer/Full Access model of second language acquisition.
