Spokespersons' Juggling in a Political Speech (Discourse from the President of the Chilean Teachers' Association, at the National March for the Teaching Profession's Dignity, October 16th, 1998)

This study examines a speech in Spanish by the President of the Chilean Teachers' Association and points out some of the speech's semantic-discursive characteristics that reveal it as a political one. These characteristics reveal the roles as political actors of the President of the Chilean Teachers' Association, his board of directors, and the teachers, as well as their political ideology and their relationships with the government. The relationship between the speaker and the audience was linguistically and discursively developed through a polarization structure which emphasized the positive aspects of teachers and the negative aspects of government.
