Aspectualizers and Complementation in Pennsylvania Dutch: The Case of schtaerte
Michael T. Putnam and Maike H. Rocker
20-27 (complete paper or proceedings contents)

Abstract

This article takes a closer look at the structural properties of aspectualizers (e.g., start, stop, finish, continue, etc.) and the verb phrases with which they can co-occur in Pennsylvania Dutch. We focus our attention on the distributional properties of the aspectualizer schtaerte 'to start' and probe whether the ostensibly infinitival complement it selects can be interpreted as a gerundive in these constructions. Our data provide further evidence of Louden's (2016, in press) proposal that, under appropriate conditions, the complement verb phrase of schtaerte behaves like a gerundive. We conclude by pointing out the theoretical relevance of these data and suggesting productive lines of research moving forward.
