Partial Phonetic Convergence in Misionero German-Portuguese Bilinguals
Robert Klosinski
1-10 (complete paper or proceedings contents)

Abstract

This paper examines the stop consonants in the koiné Misionero German (MSG), as spoken by German and Volga German immigrants in the eastern part of Misiones, Argentina. Natural recordings of three L1 MSG speakers were conducted and analyzed in terms of voice-onset-time. The results suggest partial convergence of MSG voiceless stops with Portuguese stops, as /ptk/ become more Portuguese-like. However, /bdg/ remain more distinct in the respective languages. The current study is the first to look at the phonetics of German spoken in Misiones, which is not restricted to this koiné but also encompasses Swiss German and Hunsrik varieties, among others.
