Abstract

This paper uses the factorial design to experimentally test wh-island effects and d-linking effects in American English and Colloquial Singapore English (CSE). We found robust wh-island effects in wh-fronting questions in American English and CSE and wh-in-situ questions in CSE. However, three different profiles were observed regarding the use of d-linked wh-elements. In American English, the d-linked wh-elements partially ameliorates wh-island effects; in CSE wh-fronting questions, the d-linked wh-elements improves ratings of long distance dependency; and in wh-in-situ questions in CSE, no obvious effects of d-linking were observed. We argue that both featural Relativized Minimality and processing facilitation are effective with feature specification being the variation points across languages.
