A Constraint on the Prosodic Realization of Wh-Prosody
Hitomi Minamida

Abstract

Contiguity Theory (Richards 2016) proposes that syntax and prosody determine how languages mark wh-scope. However, the theory leaves open the question of why both wh-in-situ and wh-movement languages use different wh-prosodies in different prosodic domains. In this paper, I argue that wh-prosody is realized in the lowest possible phonological phrase, determined by Igarashi's (2012) two binary parameters ([+/-lexical tone] and [+/-multiword AP]). I show that my proposal works for both wh-in-situ and wh-movement languages.
