Case and Connectivity in Moksha Relative Clauses

Abstract

On the basis of the novel data on relative clauses with inverse case attraction in Moksha Mordvin (Finno-Ugric), this paper argues that relatives with ICA are externally-headed, i.e., the head of the relative clause is outside of the relative CP, and that these relative are derived by the raising structure, according to which the head of the RC is first merged within the relative CP and then moves to its position in the main clause. This implies that raising derivation must be part of natural language syntax. The paper also compares relatives with ICA and regular externally-headed relatives in Moksha and suggests that the raising derivation co-exists with the head-external generation. After this, the syntax of raising is considered and it is suggested that raising is best derived by projecting movement of the head noun phrase, which in turn follows from projection by selection approach to labeling combined with the possibility of upward search.
