Revisiting Basque (xe-)Comparatives
Daniar Kasenov
285-291 (complete paper or proceedings contents)

Abstract

The paper revisits the data of Basque diminutive (xe-)comparatives noted by Bobaljik (2012) to be problematic for his proposal regarding locality of contextual allomorphy. The proposal is that the split-comparative structure of Caha et al. (2019), combined with the assumption that the diminutive head is positioned between the C1 and C2 heads, derives the pattern straightforwardly under widespread assumptions regarding morphological realization of syntactic structure (Embick's linear adjacency hypothesis, Bobaljik's structural adjacency hypothesis, and the Nanosyntactic phrasal spell-out). In addition to that, the paper proposes a morphological movement analysis of Basque comparative adverbials (Bobaljik 2012) and suggests a semantic treatment of the proposed structure for (xe-)comparatives, building on Zhang & Ling 2021.
