[-Person] and [+Person] Resumption in Igala
Martina Martinović
233-243 (complete paper or proceedings contents)

Abstract

This paper explores resumption patterns in the Benue-Congo language Igala, contributing to the recent literature which analyzes resumptive pronouns with reduced features as the result of chain reduction (Landau 2006) in A'-movement. Igala differs from most other languages in which this phenomenon has been described in that the number feature does not obligatorily survive chain reduction, but if it does, person must survive it as well, resulting in optionality in chain reduction. It is argued that this variation can be captured if person and number are bundled in pronouns at least in some languages, as argued in Ghomeshi & Massam 2020. Additionally, this paper shows that optionality in chain reduction in Igala has repercussions not only for our understanding of the mechanics of chain reduction, but also the driving force behind it.
