Abstract

This study reports experimental data on contrastivity conveyed through prosody in Mandarin Chinese (MC). It is the first study that systematically examines the role of prosody in signaling contrastivity in MC, manifested as Contrastive Topic and Contrastive Focus. We argue that even in a tone language such as MC, contrastivity is marked through pitch range and duration.
