Pseudo Noun Incorporation in Mandinka
Ari Goertzel
93-99 (complete paper or proceedings contents)

Abstract

This paper presents new data on nominalization in Mandinka. The paper shows that objects of nominalized verbs can be analyzed as instances of pseudo noun incorporation (PNI). The analysis of these constructions shows a connection between PNI and a more general ban on nominal complements. The paper also touches on some of the cross-linguistic properties of PNI, and the ramifications this analysis has for a unified account of the phenomenon.
