Nominal Intervention and the Extended PERSON Domain
Ivy Sichel and Maziar Toosarvandani

Abstract

This paper explores the possibility that featural distinctions in the PERSON domain may capture some of the overlaps and distinctions between pronouns and lexical DPs. In particular, it advances the proposal that all nominal expressions share some featural content (a feature that is called δ to resonate with D), while pronouns bear some featural content that lexical DPs do not, which is identified as π. A syntactic argument for this proposal is provided, based on a novel locality violation and its repair in Sierra Zapotec: an object pronoun cannot cliticize when the subject is a lexical DP.
