Abstract

This paper is the summary of a talk co-presented by three Linguistics graduate students who all work with the Ojibwe language. As learners from different dialect regions of Ojibwe country (Southwestern, Northwestern, and Eastern Ojibwe), the authors have a wide range of experience in Ojibwe language acquisition and revitalization through varied and intersecting experience in both learning and teaching the language in a variety of settings, from informal one-on-one learning/research with L1 elders and speakers of the language and teaching/learning at grassroots Ojibwe immersion initiatives to mainstream educational institutions. They study formal linguistics in order to further revitalization efforts, leading to the identification of different aspects of the language that prove challenging in acquisition, specifically the ji- morpheme, so-called preterit mode, and wh-imperatives. These concepts are highlighted in three ongoing research projects as case studies of what can be accomplished when learner challenges are supported by theoretical study and vice versa. It is the spirit of this conference, the drive for reclamation in combination with formal linguistic theory and principles, that allows for elevated outcomes for practical application, pedagogical advancement, and contribution to formal theory. This cycle of motivation and the promising results in application along three topics in Ojibwe language are demonstrated in this paper.
