Source and Content DPs: Belief-Verbs as Optionally Ditransitive Hintikkan Attitudes
Kajsa Djärv
124-134 (complete paper or proceedings contents)

Abstract

Based on evidence from English and German, this paper argues for an analysis of 'believe' (unlike 'know') as an optionally ditransitive Hintikkan attitude verb. It is shown that clauses and Content DPs ('I believe (the rumour) that p') both combine with 'believe' as direct objects, whereas Source DPs ('I believe you that p'; Djärv 2019) combine as indirect objects. The paper further provides a detailed investigation of the interpretation of Source DP sentences, showing that they presuppose an assertion event. The paper provides an analysis of Source DPs which, combined with Uegaki's (2016) analysis of Content DPs, neatly captures the structure and meaning of 'believe CP/DP' sentences in English and German.
