C and T Are Distinct Probes
Faruk Akkuş

Abstract

This paper investigates the origin of phi-features on C and T heads, particularly how they end up on multiple heads. The study examines three configurations from Arabic varieties and concludes that C and T are distinct probes, each with its own set of phi-features. The first configuration shows that C and T can agree with the same goal, but bear different values. The two probes can agree with different goals — they do not necessarily agree with the same goal. Furthermore, certain ECM-like constructions involve a finite T which shows agreement, but crucially lacks higher projections, such as C and Neg. These phenomena provide evidence that C and T must each be endowed with a discrete set of phi-features.
