A Semantic Constraint on the Interpretation of Pronominal Elements
Yuta Tatsumi
439-449 (complete paper or proceedings contents)

Abstract

Following Hiraiwa's (2016) pronominalization analysis, this study investigates what kind of modifiers can license the pronominal element in Japanese. It will be shown that the pronominalization strategy is allowed when the pronominal element combines with a local modifier of type ⟨e,t⟩. Support for the proposed analysis comes from interpretations of Japanese pre-nominal numeral classifiers, and an ambiguity of Japanese temporal adjectives.
