Two Ways of Building Reciprocity: A Study of Mandarin Reciprocals
Filipe Hisao Kobayashi
242-252 (complete paper or proceedings contents)

Abstract

Two strategies of expressing reciprocity in Mandarin Chinese are analyzed, nominal bici and adverbial huxiang. These reciprocals are shown to differ in a predictable way: bici behaves as predicted by decompositional approaches to reciprocity, whereas huxiang behaves as predicted by argument-reducing approaches. This paper, therefore, argues for the existence of different compositional paths to reciprocity.
