Epistemic Parallels between Nouns and Clauses
John Gluckman
201-210 (complete paper or proceedings contents)

Abstract

This paper argues that both the clausal and nominal domains host perspectival operators in their respective left peripheries. The argument is built on fieldwork data from Nyala East (Luhia, Bantu), in which overt morphological -- in addition to syntactic and semantic -- reflexes of perspectival operators are present. The study thus explicitly highlights the well-known similarities between nouns and clauses, and provides novel evidence for their structural similarity. It is further argued that this parallelism does not extend to the verbal domain: there is no perspectival operator in VP in Nyala East.
