Comparatives in San Sebastián del Monte Mixtec: A Mixed Construction
Iara Mantenuto
160-168 (complete paper or proceedings contents)

This paper offers novel data on conjoined comparatives from San Sebastián del Monte Mixtec (ISO 639-3: mks), an Otomanguean language spoken in Oaxaca, Mexico. San Sebastián del Monte Mixtec presents three different comparative structures: conjoined comparatives, particle comparatives, and locative comparatives. In all these kinds of comparatives a morpheme functioning as a comparative marker ga is used and gradable predicates are present. This paper focuses on conjoined comparatives in San Sebastián del Monte Mixtec, demonstrating that they are available in a gradable predicate language, exemplifying the case of a language with a conjoined comparative construction co-occurring with gradable predicates, and adding to the current literature on comparatives. It concludes with a preliminary analysis of such construction.
