Abstract

This article studies all in configurations where it gives rise to a smallness inference, for example All John ate for lunch was a banana: this sentence conveys that what John ate for lunch wasn't much. Such configurations offer a new insight in the semantics of all: they reveal that at its core, all is a quantity superlative morpheme. The argument relies on three inferences which are shown to be derivable from the superlative hypothesis: the aforementioned smallness inference, an exhaustivity entailment, and a membership presupposition.
