A Heterogeneous Approach to Gapping
David Potter
344-350 (complete paper or proceedings contents)

Gapping constructions in English are known to admit a wide and a distributive scope reading of various scopal material in the CP and TP domains. This paper argues that the Gapping scope ambiguity is the result of a structural ambiguity; Gapping is possible in just CP and vP coordinate structures. This analysis makes various correct predictions, including that split scope is impossible in Gapping.
