Sentential Subjects: Topics or Real Subjects?
Terje Lohndal
315-324 (complete paper or proceedings contents)

Abstract

This paper surveys sentential subjects in English and whether they should be analyzed as topics or as subjects sitting in SpecTP. It is argued that various speakers judge crucial data differently, and that this may speak in favor of two different analyses among speakers of English. The paper also offers a brief comparison with Norwegian, arguing that the Norwegian data support a topic analysis.
