Definiteness as Agreement: Evidence from Bulgarian
Todor Koev
133-141 (complete paper or proceedings contents)

Abstract

In the following paper the author addresses the nature and distribution of the definiteness marker (DEF) in the Bulgarian nominal phrase. It is argued that DEF is an inflectional suffix whose flexible distribution in the nominal phrase is due to what the author calls 'definiteness agreement'. Definiteness agreement is that part of the overall nominal phi agreement which takes place between the D head and the highest/closest phi-agreeing element.
