Laboratory Approaches to Romance Phonology: Contributions and Challenges to the Study of Sound Variation and Change
Laura Colantoni
1-16 (complete paper or proceedings contents)

Abstract

This paper discusses the main contributions of Romance Laboratory Phonology to phonetics and phonology, and addresses some of the challenges that the discipline has ahead. In particular, the consequences of two frequently used metaphors ('variation is a disease' and 'speech is visible') to the study of Spanish intonation are explored. The paper concludes by analyzing whether Laboratory Phonology should be part of the humanities, the sciences, or both.
