Coarticulation between Aspirated-s and Voiceless Stops in Spanish: An Interdialectal Comparison

This paper examines the acoustic cues of aspirated-s and voiceless stop clusters in Western Andalusian, Puerto Rican and Porteño Spanish. Instrumental evidence from a controlled reading task suggests that Western Andalusian voiceless stops preceded by aspirated-s have a longer VOT (postaspiration), shorter preaspiration, and longer stop closure than the same sequence in the other two dialects. In the discussion, a gestural analysis is proposed to account for these dialectal differences and also for a possible ongoing sound change in Western Andalusian Spanish. More particularly, it is hypothesized that the gestural reorganization displayed by the Andalusian data might be driven by the stable phase relationship characteristic of syllable onsets.
