Selected Proceedings of the 9th Hispanic Linguistics Symposium edited by Nuria Sagarra and Almeida Jacqueline Toribio ISBN 1-57473-413-X library binding vi + 341 pages publication date: 2006 published by Cascadilla Proceedings Project, Somerville, MA, USA Table of contents Abstract Francisco Torreira Coarticulation between Aspirated-s and Voiceless Stops in Spanish: An Interdialectal Comparison 113-120 (complete pdf) This paper examines the acoustic cues of aspirated-s and voiceless stop clusters in Western Andalusian, Puerto Rican and Porteño Spanish. Instrumental evidence from a controlled reading task suggests that Western Andalusian voiceless stops preceded by aspirated-s have a longer VOT (postaspiration), shorter preaspiration, and longer stop closure than the same sequence in the other two dialects. In the discussion, a gestural analysis is proposed to account for these dialectal differences and also for a possible ongoing sound change in Western Andalusian Spanish. More particularly, it is hypothesized that the gestural reorganization displayed by the Andalusian data might be driven by the stable phase relationship characteristic of syllable onsets. |
