Similar, Yet Different: Acquisition of Brazilian Portuguese Nasal Vowels by Spanish-English Bilinguals
Ann Aly Bailey
128-142 (complete paper or proceedings contents)

Abstract

The current study investigates the production of Brazilian Portuguese nasal vowels by native speakers and Spanish-English bilinguals. Formant frequencies and duration were measured in both groups and results indicate similar tongue height, advancement, and duration for vowels measured. Implications for transfer in typologically similar languages and third-language (L3) acquisition are discussed.
