Contact-Induced Phenomena in Gernika Basque: The Case of Dative Over-Marking
Itxaso Rodríguez-Ordóñez
236-251 (complete paper or proceedings contents)

The present study explores the contact-induced phenomenon of Basque dative over-marking (DOM), believed to occur due to the convergence between the feature matrix of the AGR functional category in Spanish leísmo and Basque (Austin 2006). Following language planning efforts for Basque purism, DOM is highly stigmatized, and consequently, considered 'polluted' Basque. Therefore, three studies were conducted targeting its use, covert attitudes and overt attitudes. Following the historical connection between language purity and identity, this paper examines DOM with issues of ethno-racial and linguistic identity through Irvine & Gal's (2000) model of Semiotic Processes.
