'My Intent Is Onelie to Further Those That Be Willing to Learne': The Lexicon of Mid-Sixteenth-Century Surgical Books in Context
Jukka Tyrkkö
177-188 (complete paper or proceedings contents)

Abstract

This paper takes a stylometric look at English surgical writing in the sixteenth century and investigates whether patterns of lexical usage can be used to endorse the claim that members of the the surgical establishment took systematic steps to elevate vernacular publishing by updating it and bringing it closer to the style favoured by physicians. The findings shows that statistical evidence supports the notion of a turning point in surgical writing during the latter half of the century, and also that multiple texts written by individual authors can often be identified using the same method.
