This paper describes A Physical Dictionary, the first English monolingual dictionary of medicine. In addition to discussing the lexicographical details of the lexicon, the paper pays particular attention to its origins and relation to contemporary glossaries and dictionaries. Drawing evidence together from a variety of bibliographical and biographical sources, the study examines the network of printers, stationers, translators, and lexicographers who, wittingly or otherwise, appear to have played parts in the story of the dictionary.
