In this article, the author examines the competition between the suffixes -ive and -ory in English. Observations are made on the historical trends in both the introduction of the words into English as well as their subsequent use. The occurrences of the adjectives in historical dictionaries and large collections of historical and present-day English texts are examined. Based on the data, the author investigates the generalisations that can be made about the usages of -ive/-ory pairs.
