Phase Impenetrability Condition and the Acquisition of Unaccusatives, Object-Raising Ba-Constructions and Passives in Mandarin-Speaking Children

The paper is about two large sample experiments on the acquisition of unaccusatives, Ba-constructions, and passives of Mandarin-speaking children. It is found that there is an apparent delay of the acquisition of passives in young Mandarin-speaking children compared to what is generally observed in many other languages. To account for this acquisition fact, Wexler's Universal Phase Requirement, which is based on Chomsky's Phase Impenetrability Condition, is employed and is proven to be workable when the vP phase is specified as a vP with an externally merged agent Spec.
