Changes in Inflectional Class as a Means to Repair Phonology
Maria-Rosa Lloret

One of the triggers of morphological variation is the emergence of phonological conflicts during the regular evolution of languages. This work examines different morphological and phonological repairs that emerge in the verbal system of Catalan as means to solve such problems, with particular emphasis on the morphological solution that entails changes in conjugational class. Additionally, it presents new data from the verbal system of the Catalan spoken in the city of Alghero (Sardinia) to support the claim that the distribution of lexical items over inflectional classes can be phonologically motivated.
