La dérivation en -isme fournit plusieurs exemples d'influence du lexique existant - les dérivés déjà constitués - s'exerçant dans les formations nouvelles au détriment des composantes sémantique et catégorielle de leur construction ou des contraintes phonologiques de bonne formation : dans la constitution de paradigmes spécialisés qui tendent à s'affranchir de l'instruction propre au suffixe ; dans des entorses au principe de fidélité et à la contrainte d'euphonie ; dans la substitution, par « principe d'économie », d'un dérivé existant au dérivé attendu ou d'une base déjà construite à la base primitive. Ces phénomènes tendent à faire préférer, pour la morphologie lexicale, les notions de modèle et de contrainte à celle de Règle de Construction des Mots.
The semantic, categorial, and phonological components of a regular derivation can be outmatched by the influence of existing derivatives. French derivation with -isme offers several examples of this lexical pressure: in the development of specialized paradigms outside the regular extent of the suffix; in violations of the faithfulness principle or euphony constraints; in the application of the "saving principle" (substitution of an existing derivative for the expected one or substitution of another stem for the regular one); etc. Since Word Formation Rules are unable to account for such phenomena, lexical morphology should instead be grounded on the notions of "model" and constraint.
