How to contribute abstracts and series information

We welcome abstracts from all linguistics working papers series and linguistics conference proceedings. If we can help in any way, please let us know.

Our Linguistics Working Papers Directory includes tables of contents for working papers volumes, and we maintain a Linguistics Proceedings Directory for conference proceedings. We forward abstracts to Blackwell's Linguistics Abstracts series. Please make sure that you send abstracts for every paper in each volume. We also ask you to send us a copy of each volume of your working papers series, so that we can verify contents and abstracts.

Series information

For conference proceedings, please see our Linguistics Proceedings Directory. In the Linguistics Working Papers Directory, we maintain a listing of all active working papers series which have sent us information about their series. If series information changes, please send updated information to Cascadilla Press as soon as possible. This will ensure that your listing remains current.

How to write the abstracts

Style information: don't use "we" or "I" for the authors, use active sentences where possible, and try to keep the abstracts concise and to the point. Highlight conclusions and consequences, so readers will know why they should read your paper. Also keep in mind that these abstracts will be searched for keywords. A simple (if unimaginative) structure that will work for many abstracts is: "This paper explores the topics/issues of this and that in these languages. In analyzing new/previously published data from these languages, the author argues for this and that conclusion." Please don't go over 150 words.

Every person who will write an abstract should receive a copy of the following instructions:

Abstracts must not be copied from any outside source. Even if LLBA or some other abstracting service has already written an abstract for a paper, you must still provide your own abstracts written independently.

By writing this abstract, you agree to give Cascadilla Press non-exclusive publication rights to the abstract, and you are aware that Cascadilla Press will transfer these rights to Blackwell. You retain the copyright on the abstract, and you are free to use the abstract for any later purpose you want.

Frequently asked questions

Can we submit information on past volumes?

Absolutely, as long as the volume is still available and contains papers which would be of interest to current readers.

Do we have to send abstracts for every paper in a volume?

Yes. We cannot send abstracts for just some of a volume to Linguistics Abstracts, so we need abstracts for every paper.

Do we have to send an actual copy of the working papers volume?

No, but we strongly recommend it because it allows us to verify titles of papers, spelling of author's names, and clarify abstracts which might need it. Please at least send a photocopy of the table of contents and the title page of each volume.

Who should write the abstracts?

Anyone can write the abstracts, as long as they are aware that the abstract will be published in Linguistics Abstracts. Sometimes abstracts are already included with the papers. Generally the author is the person who will find it easiest to write a short abstract for the paper, but anyone can do the job. It generally doesn't take more than reading the introduction and conclusion, along with skimming the rest of the paper, to write an abstract.

For future working papers volumes, you can make writing an abstract part of what you ask authors to do in submitting a paper for the volume. The question of who should write the abstracts is really only applicable to volumes which have already come out, where the authors might not be readily available to write the abstracts themselves.

What if a paper isn't in English?

The abstract should still be in English, and a note should be added at the end of the abstract saying [This paper is written in language.] Please also provide English translations of the titles along with the original titles.

When should we send in new information?

As soon as it's available.

What if we publish pieces in our working papers volumes which aren't actually academic papers?

Some volumes include humor pieces, cartoons, job information, or other items which aren't academic papers. Those items should not be included in the table of contents you send us, or in the abstracts. You can note those additional features in the description of your series if you want.

What if we include conference proceedings or dissertations in our working papers series?

That's fine -- please include information on those volumes and abstracts for inclusion in Linguistics Abstracts.
